History
Year 4: Roman Artefacts
Year 4 were lucky enough to do some enquiry using a special Roman Loan Box. It was filled with Roman items and different secondary sources. We wandered and wondered and tried to think about: what each item was; what it was used for; what it was made of; and what we could learn about the Romans, after looking at these artefacts. It was AMAZING being real historians and teleporting back in Ancient Roman times.
Year 6: World War II
As part of our World War II learning, Year 6 enjoyed an afternoon with Mr Harrison, who returned to school to talk to us about his visits to Auschwitz. We were lucky to have Mr Harrison share his own experiences of visiting the camp following on from our learning in class. Mr Harrison shared with us some images that he had had special permission to capture. Although a difficult topic to cover, Year 6 were extremely mature and respectful and learnt a great deal from the session. Thank you Mr Harrison!
Year 2: The Mystery of the Lost Suitcase
Year 2 have loved solving mysteries this half term in history. They have used a range of evidence from different sources to find answers to historical questions. They really enjoyed working out who this suitcase could have belonged to, using their learning about the Titanic they have gained this term.
Year 2: Annie Kenney
After exploring the impact of Rosa Parks, the children have spent some time exploring the activism of somebody a bit closer to home; Annie Kenney. The children were excited to learn that a strong and powerful activist in the fight for equal rights for women was born and grew up in Oldham, not far away from us. The children are becoming more confident in talking about the causes and consequences of the actions of significant individuals in history.
Year 2: SSAO Past and Present
To start our new history unit exploring the history of our school, we invited one of our members of staff into class to talk to us about her experiences of coming to SSAO when she was a child. We asked lots of questions to identify similarities and differences between our school life now and in the past. We learned that SSAO was very different for her.
The Year 2 children were lucky to have another visitor join us today to talk about what it was like being a child at our school in the 1980s. They were a pupil at SSAO when the school burned down in 1987 so shared their experiences of this event. We were shown lots of different pieces of evidence to help us understand the story of our school better. They children learned a lot!
Year 3 Bradford Industrial Museum
Year 6: Remembrance
On Friday 8th November, we attended the annual ‘Act of Remembrance’ service held in Royton Park - organised by the Royton branch of The Royal British Legion. We joined other primary schools from across Royton as we remembered the local heroes we have lost. Two wonderful Year 6 pupils created and shared their own remembrance poems at the event, with the Mayor of Oldham being blown away by their emotional words.
We will remember them.
Remembrance Sunday
As a school we spent two weeks preparing for Remembrance Sunday. Across the school we paused and reflected, we listened to stories, songs, poems and prayers and used these to help us create unique pieces of artwork to reflect remembrance day. We gathered together to pray and shared our art work. Lest we forget 2024.
Year 4: VE Day
What an amazing VE Day we have had today!
We came in dressed in blue, white and red and spent all day doing special activities related to VE day. We watched the special events taking place in London; then, created some VE day pages in our Unique Curriculum Books. Year 4 even got that chance to listen to Mrs. Langmead's aunty sing the White Cliffs of Dover, after she had been out with her friends knitting poppies that morning; she was 8 when the war ended and still remembers every word to that song, it was the song she sang on the first VE day!
We loved listening to this song and then joining in with it to end our day!
I'll Remember Song
Join us to celebrate with a special new song called I'll Remember, composed by Simon Haw MBE. Watch, learn and enjoy!
