Year 4: 'Thesaurus Thinking' Session

Year 4 have spent a few weeks revisiting key knowledge and skills in English. We had a 'thesaurus thinking' session today and loved getting the thesauruses out - we really enjoyed finding synonyms with our working partners and identified antonyms as well. 

Year 4: Daily Reading Time 

Year 4 love their daily reading time to start the afternoon - we relax and read. We get to read in the den or read with a friend. We get to choose books from our genre boxes and also get chance to go up into our amazing library to choose a book for the week. As a class we have story time every day from 3:00 - our favourites go into our Y4 favourite box so we can read them again on our own. 

Year 4: Story Writing Journey 

Year 4 have put all their GPS learning from the past 5 weeks, into the learning time capsule (to revisit again and again this year). We are now starting our story writing journey with an experience day: walking in the woods, exploring using our senses and word gathering. Watch this space for our SUPER STAR STORIES!

Year 4: Today we 'just' read a book... 

We got to choose where to sit or how to sit or lie or even stand which has therapeutic benefits.  We spent 20 minutes being absorbed by books and stimulating our brains in different ways.  Good readers make good writers; not only am I improving my reading skills, this will then pour into my writing.  Today we 'just' read a book...

Year 3: Autumn Poetry

We have been reading poetry about Autumn.

Year 2: Reading 

We love visiting our school library. It is such a special time. We enjoy choosing our own books and relaxing in a cosy space to do some independent reading. 

Year 4: Proofreading and Editing

Over the past few weeks, Year 4 have been securing their understanding of proofreading and moving on to editing, to improve the quality of the content and vocabulary to suit the audience they are writing for.

A few weeks ago, they needed lots of support with proofreading but LOOK AT THEM NOW.... Here they are proofreading with their buddies independently and then using the skills they've just practised to proofread and green pen their own writing independently. Anyone caught doing an amazing job was given one of our strawberry scented stickers! Well done Year 4 we are so proud of you; all your hard work and effort has paid off. Super Star Writers in the making...

Year 6: Non-chronological Reports

Year 6 have been working hard on their non-chronological reports, based on the yellow-spotted lizard, and have produced some fantastic pieces! 

Year 6: Reading Ambassadors

Our year 6 reading ambassadors are doing a weekly read to our key stage 1 children. This will be a weekly thing featuring different year 6 reading ambassadors. Passing on their love of reading to our younger school children.

Year 5: Robert Scott Enactment 

In January, in English, we enacted a scene from a famous Antarctic exploration by Robert Scott. We were writing a diary from his perspective. 

 

Year 1: Jack and the Beanstalk Performance

Year 1 have been so excited to attend a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Lighthouse Church - we saw some familiar faces! 

Year 3: World Poetry Day

We have been learning a poem called 'Ocean Secrets' by Diana Murrary.  We had great fun performing the poem.

Year 6: Poetry 

Year 6 are enjoying their poetry unit so far! We are studying the poem ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou. We have explored her inspirational story and will use her work as inspiration for our own poems about overcoming difficulties we may face.

 

Reception: The Little Red Hen

In Reception we have been looking at the book The Little Red Hen and retelling the story using puppets and different voices. We used a recipe to bake our own bread this week and we realised it is better when we help each other! The bread was really tasty!

Year 5: Hexapod

We are writing a non-chronological report on the moon on Pandora. Children designed their own six-legged creature to form part of their report.

Year 2: Big Write

Our first big write in year 2. We have learned all about expanded noun phrases and prepositional openers in English. We have use our knowledge to write a setting description.

Reception: Dinosaurs

The Reception children have been reading stories about dinosaurs and looking at new and exciting words. They have drawn pictures and labelled them and written some lovely sentences about Sid the dinosaur who lost his roar.

Year 4: Winter Wonderland Experience 

Wow! What an amazing Winter Wonderland Experience lesson we had! We kicked off our next writing journey in our own winter wonderland - gathering and collecting words and phrases to make our own personalised vocab bank. We then used some of these words and the story setting to inspire us... Look at the beautiful masterpieces we created.

EYFS and KS1 Library

Our EYFS/KS1 Library is now open for visitors. If your child is in EYFS or KS1 they are welcome to come with a parent each Friday 3.30-4pm to choose a book to borrow. Please collect your child as normal then meet by Miss Butterworth's classroom door.

Year 6: Desert Animals

In English, we are really enjoying creating our own non-chronological reports based on a desert animal of our choice. Watch this space for the final results! 

Year 4: Magic Show Posters

Year 4 loved their first picture book study week. We spent a week delving into a magical world and then created some of our own posters to advertise a magic show!

Year 4: Advent Topic

Year 4 began their Advent topic with a building vocabulary session. They read about Advent and magpied key vocabulary they felt linked perfectly to the season of Advent. Using their personalised Advent word banks, they created Advent word art and wove advent colours and symbols into their masterpieces!

Year 5: Young Writers Competition Poetry Anthology

A massive congratulations to our poets in Year 5, whose poems have been selected by the Young Writers Competition to be published in an anthology 'Lest We Forget' - Commemorate. They have worked very hard and we are very proud of all the hard work and dedication they have put in to producing amazing original poems.

Year 4: Emmanuel's Dream

Year 4 loved their picture book study week! We spent a week delving into Emmanuel's life and his achievements. We then created some of our own stars where we shared our thoughts with regards to key messages we had personally taken from the text. 

Year 1: World Book Day 

On World Book Day we had lots of fun! In the morning we visited The Lighthouse Venue in Salford and took part in a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk. In the afternoon we got cosy in our pyjamas and shared our favourite stories with each other. 

Reception: Show Time Stories

During Exploring Time we have been writing books! We used pictures from Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Very Greedy Bee and wrote sentences to go with them. We enjoyed sharing these stories at Show Time in class.

Year 5: Published Poetry

Wow! We have published writers in our school...Check out the writing clubs poems about War that have been published in a poetry book!

Choral Speaking

Our Choral Speaking team were presented their award today - after taking part in Oldham Rotary Club's annual Choral Speaking Competition. Well done to each and everyone of you for your outstanding performance. 

Year 3: Exploring Front Covers

Year 3 enjoyed investigating how a book’s cover can give clues about whether it is fiction or non-fiction.

Year 6: National Poetry Day

Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed their workshop with Ian Bland to celebrate National Poetry Day on 2nd October! Some super poets in the making - some of us even got to share our poems with Ian & other schools across the country! 

Year 6: Poetry - ‘I Rise’ poem by Maya Angelou

Year 6 have studied the ‘I Rise’ poem by Maya Angelou. This is some of our finished poems - we’re proud of them all! 

Year 6: World War II Evacuees

After undertaking lots of work on the process of evacuation, Year 6 are preparing to write a diary entry in the role of an evacuee. We have explored the positive and negative experiences of evacuees and have analysed examples before we begin to write! 

Year 3: Picture Book Studies

As part of our Picture Book Study Week, year 3 explored the story “I Really Want the Cake” . They discussed the themes of temptation, self-control, and making good choices, before designing their own delicious and imaginative cake creations!

Year 4: Remembrance Poetry 

Year 4 spent some time exploring remembrance poetry; they then used their deeper understanding to write some of their own personalised poetry. 

Year 3: Picture Book Week

As part of Picture Book Week, Year 3 explored Mixed and created their own unique “mixed” characters. We linked our learning to Catholic Social Teaching, celebrating dignity, equality and the importance of living together in unity.

Year 3: Picture Book Week

During Picture Book Week, the children explored the story Croc and the Bird, reflecting on themes of friendship and accepting our differences. This was linked to Catholic Social Teachings and the importance of respecting and valuing one another. 

Year 3: World Book Day! 

As part of our World Book Day activities, pupils read Finn’s Little Fibs and discussed honesty and choices. They designed a large “fib monster” with reasons someone might lie, and a smaller one showing ways the problem could be put right- all whilst being in our pjs!

Year 5: World Book Day

Celebrated World Book Day with a range of activities. Including designing their own character.

 

Year 1: World Book Day

We spent a cosy day in our pyjamas sharing some of our favourite books. As a class we focused on 'Meesha makes friends' by Tom Percival. We thought about what makes a good friend and then practised some of the activities that Meesha did in the story.

Reading: Picture Book Week

As part of our Picture Book Week in Reading, we explored the inspiring story Greta and the Giants. We discussed the importance of standing up for what we believe in and how even small actions can make a big difference in the world.

Year 3: Fiction and Non-fiction

Year 3 have been developing their understanding of fiction and non-fiction by sorting books into the correct categories. A fun, hands-on activity to become enthusiastic readers!

Year 3: Grammar Surgeons!

Our grammar surgeons have been busy operating on words! They matched prefixes and suffixes to root words to create new words and develop their understanding of word structure.
